Recently, Kingsfeld Ltd, an excavation and haulage contractor located in Queensland, Australia added the new Loadrite X-Weigh 2350 onboard excavator weighing system to two of its excavators. Kingsfeld has been contracted to remove 1.8 million ton of material from a site at the Logan Smart TiP facility in Brisbane. The operation involved excavators digging the material from the ground, stockpiling the material, then loading the trucks to maximum capacity with a wheel loader. The material was then transported to another project in Brisbane where it is used as fill for reclaimed land.
This double handling of material with the use of both an excavator and wheel loader, increased the fuel costs for the contract and also prevented the wheel loader from being employed at another job site. With today’s high operating, labor and rental costs, this had a significant impact on the profitability of the contract.
With the installation of the Loadrite X-Weigh 2350 systems, stockpiling is no longer necessary, as the excavators can now accurately weigh material as they load trucks. The wheel loader is no longer required for stockpiling, which saves the operation the additional time of double handling the material. This has meant that more trucks are loaded per day, as there is no need for tip-offs and reloading. General Manager, Steve Rhind says “the product has allowed us to maximise the productivity and profitability of our trucks, as well as our contractor’s."
With no need to stockpile material, the operation has saved the operating costs of running the wheel loader and operator, which has meant an estimated cost savings of $150.00 (AUD) per hour. With nine hour operating days, and the wheel loader scheduled for twenty-two days per month, the estimated monthly savings are $29,700.00 (AUD, approx $28,500 USD).
